What do the abbreviations kW, kWh, MWh and kVA mean?

  • The amount of energy that an electrical device needs to function (also called wattage) is expressed in watt or kilowatt (kW), in which 1 kW = 1,000 watt. For example: 20 kW. The power a device or machine needs is often also expressed in kVA or kilo volt ampere, in which 1 kVA = 1kW.
  • Kilowatt hour (kWh) is the consumption of a device per hour. For example: a device with a wattage of 20 kW that has been in use for an hour has used 20 kWh.
  • The amount of electricity used is also expressed in kWh or MWh (1 MWh = 1,000 kWh) on your invoice. The energy cost is expressed in eurocent/kWh or euro/MWh, depending on your consumption.
